A complete guide to New Hampshire's Education Freedom Account

26.05.2026

New Hampshire's Education Freedom Accounts (EFA) is a state-funded program that gives parents direct control of public education funds to use toward private school tuition and other qualified educational expenses.

MyEdSpace is an approved provider for EFA, meaning New Hampshire families can get expert math teaching for their children.

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements for the EFA in New Hampshire

Every K–12 student in New Hampshire is eligible to apply for an EFA — regardless of household income.

Students must meet the following requirements:

  • The parent and student must be New Hampshire residents
  • Eligible to enroll in their local public elementary or secondary school (K–12)
  • 5 years old by September 30 of the given school year

Note — students cannot participate if they are enrolled full-time (more than 50% of instructional time) in a local district public school or a chartered public school, including VLACS.

Application

The EFA application process in New Hampshire

Applications are administered by the Children's Scholarship Fund New Hampshire (CSF NH).

Applications for the 2026–27 school year are currently open. To receive 100% of the EFA grant, applications and supporting materials must be complete and verified by July 15 2026.

Note on priority groups — the following students are not subject to the annual enrollment cap and may apply at any time: current EFA students, siblings of current EFA students, children with disabilities, and students from families at or below 350% of the federal poverty guidelines.

To apply, parents/guardians must:

  • Submit an application at nh.scholarshipfund.org
  • Provide proof of New Hampshire residency (e.g. utility bill, driver's licence, tax return, lease agreement, or bank statement)
  • Provide proof of student identity (e.g. birth certificate, US passport, or prior year 1040 listing the student as a dependent)
  • Sign the annual EFA Parent Agreement

Families must reapply annually.

Using Your Funds

How to spend EFA funds and what they can be spent on

For the 2025–26 school year, the base EFA grant is $4,265.64 per student.

Students may qualify for additional funding on top of the base grant:

  • Household income at or below 185% of the federal poverty line
  • Student with a qualifying disability
  • Identified as an English Language Learner

Funds are distributed via ClassWallet and released in four instalments:

  1. 1.1st instalment (Mid-September): 20%
  2. 2.2nd instalment (Mid-November): 20%
  3. 3.3rd instalment (Mid-January): 30%
  4. 4.4th instalment (Mid-April): 30%

Unused EFA funds roll over from quarter to quarter and year to year, for as long as the student remains enrolled in the program.

EFA funds can be spent on:

  • Tuition and fees at a private school
  • Tuition and fees for non-public online learning programs
  • MyEdSpace (see more information below)
  • Textbooks, curriculum, and instructional materials
  • Tutoring services provided by a certified or accredited individual or facility
  • Educational software and applications
  • Computer devices (up to $3,500, once every 3 years)
  • Tablets (up to $1,500) and other digital electronic devices (up to $750)
  • School uniforms
  • Fees for standardised assessments, AP exams, and college entrance exams, plus prep courses
  • Special education services and therapies
  • Career or technical school tuition
  • College or university tuition for dual-enrolled high school students
  • Fee-for-service transportation
  • Education programs including summer programs, sports, music, and dance

EFA funds cannot be spent on cell phones or cell phone plans, general household internet, streaming services, travel, or items purchased before the student's date of eligibility. Hand-written receipts are not accepted and ClassWallet orders can only be shipped to the verified New Hampshire address on file.

All purchases must be made through EFA-approved providers. Misuse of funds can result in removal from the program.
